SCENES #8, #9, and #10
SCENE 8 - BACK AT THE SHOP
Narrator 10
The sadness at the Magic Toy Shop only increased when
news arrived that Pinocchio had been back in town and then
was taken away again. Geppetto, who had missed his little
wooden boy since the beginning, was more determined than
ever to find him this time, so he was packing his things, and
preparing for a voyage. He was giving last minute
instructions to all his wonderful toys.
Geppetto
Now Liz, I'm expecting you to keep an eye
on the shop while I'm gone. Counters and windows
cleaned every morning.
Liz
Yes, sir.
Geppetto
Cal Zone, you'll keep the floors clean, won't you?
Cal
That I will. But how do you expect
to sail away in such a little boat?
Geppetto
It's all I have. I'll get there somehow.
I cannot stand by and watch while
my little boy gets dragged off to some island.
Rigoletto
Anything for me, sir?
Geppetto
Yes, Rigoletto. Take care of all
the food while I'm gone. Meatball and
Mozzarella can help. Okay?
Meatball, Mozzarella
That we will, sir.
Geppetto
And Souffle?
Sue
At your service!
Geppetto
My correspondence and bookkeeping.
Sue
Not a detail will be missed.
Geppetto
Thank you all. Now I must go.
Rigoletto
Sir, the wind is changing.
There may be a storm before morning.
Geppetto
Storm or no storm, my little boy is out there,
and I must find him.
Liz
Our hearts go with you, sir.
Geppetto
Thank you. Goodbye.
(All say goodbye in their own way.
Geppetto leaves with his bags.)
SONG 10 - How Far Does Love Go?
Singing Toy 1
Why does he have to go?
Singing Toy 2
You would too if you were him, you know
Singing Toy 3
But we all love Pinocchio
Singing Toy 2
It's not the same
The love that a father has
For his lost little boy
It's not something we can understand
With the heart of a toy
Toys and Cast
How far does love go
Seeking one lost?
Will it go on forever
No matter the cost?
How long will love look
Seeking a friend?
On and on forever
Love never ends
Toys and Cast (Geppetto)
How far does love go (Pinocchio)
Seeking one lost? (I'm looking still)
Will it go on forever (I haven't found you)
No matter the cost? (Someday I will)
How long will love look (Pinocchio)
Seeking a friend? (I've looked for you everywhere
I know to look)
On and on forever (My little boy)
Love never ends (I miss him so)
Liz
It's late now. Lights out, and sleep well.
SCENE 9 - BACK AT THE SCHOOL
Narrator 11
Just as Rigoletto had warned, there was a storm that night. It
wasn't the biggest storm that ever hit the coast, but it was
strong enough, and most folks were glad they were inside
while the rain fell in torrents and the wind tossed the water
where it wished. A few anxious parents wondered about
their boys, but all assumed they were spending the night at
the house of a friend. That's what the boys had told them.
Narrator 12
The next morning, the storm notwithstanding, the sun shone
bright as usual. Folks stepped out to see if there were any
branches lying around, or buckets blown off their porches. It
was a nearly perfect morning until the sad news spread
through town. Not only were all the boys gone, but the little
boat that belonged to Geppetto had washed ashore in the
early morning, and no one was on board.
Narrator 13
Mrs. Pizza arrived at school the next day to find half of her
students were gone. Most of the class thought the boys were
playing hookey, and had probably taken the sunshine as a
signal to go fishing. It had happened that way in the past. But
this time the story was different, and as the realization set in,
a strange quiet settled down over the whole community. It
was a sadness none had experienced before.
Mrs. Pizza
(silence) Perhaps we should at least try to study.
We were beginning Chapter 12 in our Geography lessons.
Do you think you could read a little for us, Miss Guini?
Lin
You may call me Lin.
Mrs. Pizza
Okay, Lin Guini. Would you read for us?
Lin
I would like to, Mrs. Pizza, but
I'm a little sad with the boys gone and all.
Mrs. Pizza
What about you, Angela?
You've been extra quiet this morning.
Angela
I saw him go.
Mrs. Pizza
Who?
Angela
Pinocchio. I was there when it happened.
Some guy was promising all the boys
freedom on some island somewhere.
I tried to talk Pinocchio out of it,
but Tortellini was there, and he
convinced him to go with them.
Lin
Who was the man?
Angela
I don't know.
Someone with a tall, dark hat and a long coat.
Mrs. Pizza
Did he say which island they were going to?
Angela
He called it the Island of Adventure.
Lin
Adventure Island? I've never heard of it.
Do you think it's in our geography books?
Mrs. Pizza
No, not by that name.
But there is a map on page 67.
Why don't we look at it?
(All turn pages to look.)
Lin
There's an island just south of the cape.
Do you think that could be it?
Mrs. Pizza
Not very likely.
Too many fishing boats go near there
to make it a secret hideaway.
Angela
I think I know which one it is...
this one down near the corner.
Mrs. Pizza
Hmmm. No fishing boats ever go there.
Too many rocky shoals.
Lin
How do you know so much about
fishing, Mrs. Pizza?
Mrs. Pizza
Actually, I don't, but a friend of mine is
a fisherman. He has a boat
called "Ocean Dreamer."
Angela
If we asked him, do you think he
would take us there... just to see, I mean,
if that's where the boys are?
Mrs. Pizza
You really want to go, don't you?
Angela
Yes, I really do.
I especially want to get Pinocchio back.
Mrs. Pizza
Well... I don't know if this will work,
but it would make a great geography lesson,
wouldn't it? (The girls all agree.)
All right, girls. Bring your books
and follow me to the docks.
SCENE 10 - OCEAN DREAMER
Narrator 14
The docks were alive with activity, but even with all that
hustle and bustle the beautiful white boat was easy to spot. It
was anchored just a few yards offshore. But where the
captain was was another matter altogether. They looked
everywhere before finding him in a little Cafe on the point
overlooking the harbor. "What can I do for you today?" he
asked.
Narrator 15
Mrs. Pizza told him all she knew, and of Angela's wish to
find the little wooden boy. "Well," said the captain, "all this
talk of magic toys and little wooden boys is beyond me, but
if you want a ride out to the isle, I think it can be managed."
And so, after finishing his coffee, the captain came down the
winding stairway to the water. Before long the anchor was
up and the harbor was floating away backwards behind
them.
Narrator 16
It was probably the best geography lesson the girls ever
experienced. Angela stood near the front of the boat with the
wind rushing past her and the deep hope in her heart that
they wouldn't be too late. Every minute took them further out
into the deep blue, and as they sailed the wind and the water
seemed almost like they were singing the same song.
SONG 11 - Ocean Dreamer
Angela
Somewhere out in the world
Somewhere lost in the darkness
Someone's out in the cold
Someone I know
Somewhere far from the shore
Somewhere far from the homeland
Someone needs me to find and carry him home
Angela and Schoolgirls
Sail away, Ocean
Sail away, Ocean Dreamer
Catch in your sails the wind
Catch in your sails the sky
Cause out there somewhere
Someone whose wings are broken
Is waiting for somebody who
Will touch him and teach him to fly
Singing Schoolgirl
How do stories begin
Turn a page never knowing
How do strangers arrive
Then win your heart
And the changes that come
Unannounced when they're coming
Are the changes that find and carry you far
Girls and Cast
Sail away, Ocean
Sail away, Ocean Dreamer
Catch in your sails the wind
Catch in your sails the sky
Cause out there somewhere
Someone whose wings are broken
Is waiting for somebody who
Will touch him and teach him to fly
Sail away, Ocean
Sail away, Ocean Dreamer
Catch in your sails the wind
Catch in your sails the sky
Cause out there somewhere
Someone whose wings are broken
Is waiting for somebody who
Will touch him and teach him to fly
Angela
Cause out there somewhere
Someone whose wings are broken
Is waiting for somebody who
Will touch him and teach him to fly.
| SCENE #11
THE ISLAND OF MISADVENTURE
Narrator 17
Meanwhile, on the island, things hadn't been going too well
for Pinocchio. He was lonelier than ever, and began to
realize that the other boys weren't quite the friends they
claimed to be. He sat disconsolately down by the water's
edge, as though by wishing some craft would magically
appear and take him back to where he most longed to be.
But there were no magic ships, and no blue fairies... just
water and waves and miles and miles from home.
Narrator 18
Some of the other boys would sometimes come down to
talk to Pinocch-, but not for long. There were better
amusements, they said, higher up. "Why don't you come with
us?" they asked. But Pinocchio was too sad for any of their
games, and after awhile he even began to notice some
changes in the way the boys looked, and sometimes how
they talked.
(Tort, Rav, and Mac appear, each with ears of a donkey)
Tort
Hey, Plank, how's life on the beach?
Rav
We're having a blast up there!
HEE HAWT to join us and be part of the fun.
Mac
Nah, not him. He sits around here
looking like a piece of driftwood
and wishes he were back HEEHOME.
(The others laugh.)
Pinocchio
I don't want anything to do with it.
This isn't where I belong.
Tort
Oh, but you do, PinoccHEEHO.
This is a great place!
Right, guys?
Rav
Like yeah, dude. Everything's cool,
it's fun, and it's all FREEHAW.
Mac
And every once in a while, I feel like
kneeling down and doing a good kick.
(he demonstrates)
You ought to try it.
It feels mighty good.
Rav
(Rav tries it)
It does feel good.
Wow, I didn't know I could kick like that.
Tort
Ah, this place gets better all the time.
Come on, PinoccHEEHO.
Don't stay down here where nothin's happenin'.
Come up where the good stuff is!
Pinocchio
No, you guys go ahead.
I'm not interested.
Mac
Okay, Pinocch-, but you don't know what you're missin'.
SEEHAW you later!
Rav
Yeah, wooden dude. It's been real.
Tort
I gave you a chance, Pinocch-,
to be a real boy, and you turned us down.
Guess I won't be seeing you any more.
(Tort, Rav, and Mac climb back up the hill)
Pinocchio
A real boy. That's all I ever wanted to BEEHAW.
(Shocked) Did I say that?
Angela
(running in)
Pinocchio!
Pinocchio
Angela?
Angela
I've been all over the island.
All I could find were a bunch of donkeys.
Pinocchio
Didn't you find any of the other boys?
Angela
No, just donkeys.
Pinocchio
How can that BEEHAW?
Angela
Pinocchio, not you too!
We've got to get you off this island,
and we've got to go now.
Pinocchio
How?
Angela
Can you swim?
Pinocchio
I don't know, I never tried.
Angela
Well, now's the time.
Over here. Do what I do.
(Angela gets ready to jump)
One, two, three... (she leaps off stage)
Pinocchio
(gets ready to jump)
One, two, THREEHAW... (he jumps off stage)
SONG 12 - Danger In The Deep
Splash One! One brave girl
Goes leaping into the surf - Yo!
Splash Two! One wooden boy
Comes jumping in, but he cannot swim
No problem here - Say no... no
No reason to fear - I say
No trouble, no trouble at all
No trouble cause the boy
The boy floats like a cork - Hey!
Now stroke, Angela, stroke those waves
With a rhythm that's deep and strong - Yo!
Swing, Pinocchio, swing those arms
Plus add in the feet
Get movin' to the beat
Cause the water is just like a deep blue street
Like an avenue wide and long - Hey!
Splash Three! Say, what was that
There's something deep and dark in the water
Movin' across the path like a shadow
Movin' now slow, movin' now fast
Big and deep and dark in the water
All line the rail where the Dreamer is lashed
Pull, Angela, pull for the boat
And send us one Pinocchio float!
Splash Four! This time we saw the teeth
The mouth so wide and a gleam in the eye
Stroke, Angela, stroke those waves!
Fly, Pinocchio, fly!
There's danger in the deep
Down in the deep blue deep
With a body this long and a tail so high
And your friends on the boat are standing by
To pull you up when you're close enough
But the wind is strong and the water is rough
And there's danger, danger, danger in the deep
Closer now, and sizing you up
Deep and dark and swift is the shadow
Movin' in slow, movin' in fast
Closer to the place where the Dreamer is lashed
Pull, Angela, pull for the boat
And send us one more Pinocchio float!
Splash Five! And you're oh so close
Every hand on deck is reaching out
Every voice is raised in a mighty shout
But the shadow is here, and spinning around
And the sea is alive with waves and sound
Pull, Angela, pull - Don't stop!
The shadow is close - the shadow is here
Pinocchio, Angela, listen to me
Just Pull! Pull!
Splash Six! Oh, no! Darkness!
