Pinocchio Script - Scenes 5, 6, and 7

SCENE #5

ANOTHER DAY AT SCHOOL

Narrator 8
Stringer did come back, but when he arrived at the spot, no one was there. The Blue Fairy carried Pinocchio across the miles on the moonbeams, for she was made of moonlight and could walk where others cannot. They rested for awhile when the sun rose, and walked and walked after that, but at last there came a moment when they saw familiar streets and heard the sounds of school children playing in the afternoon. It was the last class of the day when Pinocchio walked in with his head down.

Mrs. Pizza
Number 5. Authentic. Authentic.
Tortellini, eyes on your own paper please.

Tort
But there's nothing on my paper, Mrs. Pizza.

Mrs. Pizza
So you're trying to copy off Macaroni?

Tort
I would, but there's nothing on his paper either. (laughter)

Mrs. Pizza
Someday you boys are going to be sorry
that you never studied. Do you think there
are jobs out there for boys who don't know anything?

Rav
I know what the area of a circle is!

Mrs. Pizza
Okay, Ravioli. What is it?

Rav
The area of a circle is "Pi R squared."

Mrs. Pizza
That's right, Rav, it is.

Rav
And the area of a LARGE circle
is "LARGE Pi R squared." (loud laughter)

Mrs. Pizza
Number 6. Reiterate. Reiterate.
(Pinocchio enters and takes his seat
with his head down.)

Mac
Well, look who's back. It's the wooden boy himself.

Rav
Hey, the dude has returned.

Tort
Check out the Schnoz. (laughter)

Mrs. Pizza
Quiet, boys. Pinocchio, is that you?

Pinocchio
(looking down) Yes.

Mrs. Pizza
Number 7 will be the last one. Redundant. Redundant.
Please leave your finished papers on the front desk.
Class is dismissed.
(Class slowly leaves. Angela stays, cleans board, etc.
Mrs. Pizza sits down next to Pinocchio.)

Mrs. Pizza
Pinocchio, are you okay?
You're the last person I expected to see.
We've been wondering what happened to you.

Pinocchio
It's kind of a long story. I got sidetracked.

Mrs. Pizza
Can you tell me about it?

Pinocchio
Maybe some other time.
I'm still feeling bad about it just now.

Mrs. Pizza
All right. I'm here if you need me, though.
Will you remember that? (Pinocchio nods.)
(Mrs. Pizza stands up.)
Angela, you're doing a fine job. Thank you.

Angela
You're welcome.
(Mrs. Pizza gathers her things and leaves.)

Mrs. Pizza
I'll see you tomorrow.

Angela
Bye.
(She looks at Pinocchio, who is
still sitting there with his head down.)
Pinocchio, you aren't happy, are you?

Pinocchio
It's been terrible. I thought the world
would be a wonderful place.
I lost my way before I knew it.

Angela
(sitting down next to him)
How did it happen?

Pinocchio
I was going home from school,
but I stopped to watch some marionettes.
The owner liked the way I danced.
He took me away with him.

Angela
What happened to your nose?

Pinocchio
I lied to a friend. She rescued me,
but this is the result of my not telling the truth.

Angela
I'm sorry, Pinocch-.
I wish things could be like they were before.

Pinocchio
What do you mean?

SONG 6 - I'll Hold The Dream For You

Angela
I remember still the day you came
You made me laugh and all my classmates felt the same
We wished that we could be like you
I remember when you first walked by
Your painted smile, the bright reflection in your eyes
Hey, Pinocch-, can you remember?
Pinocchio
That seems so far away now
I had my chance - I went and blew it
I don't know if I belong here anymore
Angela
That's not the way it is at all
You were all alone - That's when it's easiest to trip and fall
Listen to me, Pinocchio
There's a brighter story still
The promise waits - You're going to make it
I know you will
Don't let it seem so hard, so rough
Until your heart is strong enough
I'll hold the dream for you
Pinocchio
Do you think it might be true?
Do you think she'd give me a second chance to do it?
I don't know if I have the confidence anymore
Angela
I think you do and I'll help you now
Don't you think together - Don't you think together
we can get there somehow?
Listen to me, Pinocchio
There's a brighter story still
The promise waits - You're going to make it
I know you will
Don't let it seem so hard, so rough
Until your heart is strong enough
I'll hold the dream for you

Angela
Come on. I'll walk you home.

SCENE #6 and #7

SCENE 6 - BACK ON THE STREET

Narrator 9
Angela walked Pinocchio back until they could see the Magic Toy Shop a block and a half away. Then Pinocchio asked if he could go the rest on his own. Angela promised she would look for him at school the next day. Pinocchio bravely headed toward home when around the corner came the last thing anyone expected. The Deli Rats were in full stride, mischief in their eyes, boys against the world! And they were singing about it too. The song was strong, and happy, and confident, and Pinocchio stopped to listen.

SONG 7 - Song Of The Boys

My dad told me if I listen carefully
and do whatever I am told
Then I'll grow to be a fine young entity
and have no regrets when I am old - *
I'm not buying it, not even trying it
`cause I'm gonna do exactly what I want to
Listen to me, hear what I say
I'm not listening, no way! (long pause)
And if you don't like it - TOUGH
No, we don't want to do what we have to do
No, we don't want to do what we've got to do
Move on over out of our way
We don't want what you got to say
Just leave us, we'll do fine alone
We make our minds up on our own

My mom told me there are lots of things to be
aware of when you face the world
But why should I obey when all moms talk that way
And she thinks that `cause she's a girl - *
I'm not buying it, not even trying it
`cause I'm gonna do exactly what I want to
Listen to me, hear what I say
I'm not listening, no way! (long pause)
And if you don't like it - TOUGH
No, we don't want to do what we have to do
No, we don't want to do what we've got to do
Move on over out of our way
We don't want what you got to say
Just leave us, we'll do fine alone
We make our minds up on our -
No, we don't want to do what we have to do
No, we don't want to do what we've got to do
Move on over out of our way
We don't want what you got to say
Just leave us, we'll do fine alone
We make our minds up on our own

SONG 8 - Come Away

Man With Tall Hat
I know exactly what you're saying
I was there myself once before
And you can bet I understand completely
That's why I couldn't agree with you more
Come away - You can leave it all behind you
I know a place where nobody can find you
Come with me, boys, to the Island of Adventure
Boys
Wait a minute, do you think we're as stupid as that?
We don't follow just anyone who comes
wearing a tall dark hat
If you wanna convince us - you gotta say more
Man With Tall Hat
I do not blame you for your caution
There's lots of cons and cheats in the world
But I promise you can count on me completely
I never hurt a poor soul, that's for sure
And when you come, you will see it all yourself and
You can leave all your worries on the shelf then
Come with me, boys, to the Island of Adventure
Boys
How do we know what you're saying is true?
We're not hard to convince, but we gotta see proof
Have you anything to show us - maybe a picture or two
Man With Tall Hat
I have it right here in my pocket
A free ticket for each and for all
As you can see it gives the holder free admission
After that there'll be no cost at all
Will you come or will you stay?
I don't have all day!
`Cause tonight we leave the dock at exactly twelve o'clock
If you wanna be with us - you better be there
Well, what do you say?
Boys
We'll be there!
Man With Tall Hat
Are you sure?
Boys
Yes, we're sure.
Man With Tall Hat
Then meet me at MIDNIGHT!

SCENE 7 - MASTS AND MOONLIGHT

(While the scene changes to the dark ship,
Angela and Tortellini both try to win Pinocchio.)

Tort
Come with us, Pinocchio.
You don't have anything to lose
and you have everything to win.

Angela

Don't listen to him, Pinocch-.
Don't listen to any of them.
They don't know what they're talking about.

Tort

You stay out of this. Come on, Pinocch-.
Be one of us. We're a gang, and we're together.
You'll find you belong here.

Angela

No, you won't.
They don't have anything to offer you.
Look at them. What have they done for you so far?
Made fun of you, that's what.

Tort
No, we haven't. Pinocch-, you're one of us.
Come now, or you'll be left behind.

Angela
Don't go, Pinocch-.
I might never see you again.

Tort
We're leaving, Pinocchio.
It's now or never.
(Pinocchio looks one last time at Angela...
then heads for the dark ship.)

Angela
No, Pinocchio, no.
I've got to find Gepetto.

SONG 9 - Sailing Away!

Sailing - Sailing away to freedom
Leaving the world to wonder
How we escaped at all
No one - No one to whom we answer
No one we have to follow
No one out there who expects us to listen
whenever they call

No one to tell us when to wake up or
When to do chores, when to eat supper
No one to tell us what we should be
What we should wear or what we should eat
No one to tell us how to grow up
No one to say when we should show up
Listen to me - I want to do everything my way
That's why I'm riding this midnight highway

Hey! - Sailing away with purpose
Willing to make the choice and
Choosing without delay
Sailing - Sailing away to freedom
Sailing away forever
I'm sailing away
Oh, I'm sailing, I'm sailing away!
