Tort
A limb off the old oak tree is more like it
Pinocchio
What do you guys want?
Tort
We want to do a little negotiating, see.
Rav
Yeah, we're the leaders of the gang.
Pinocchio
The Deli Rats?
Tort
Hey, the kid's heard of us.
Mac
Looks like we got ourselves a reputationism.
Tort
Now, look, we're holding a round table
discussion, see, and we need you
TO BE OUR PANEL! (laughter)
Rav
No, get this. We're going on a cruise, right.
And we need Pinocchio TO BE THE LOG. (laughter)
Mac
Wait. What do you call Pinocchio when you
drop him in the lake?
Tort and Rav
What do you call him?
Mac
BOB! (Laughter)
Pinocchio
I'm not interested.
I'm taking these books home to Geppetto.
Tort
Listen to him boys.
He's being a STICK IN THE MUD! (laughter)
Rav
Taking his books home to Papa.
He'll probably start studying them too.
Mac
That makes Pinocchio
the BOARD OF EDUCATION! (laughter)
Tort
Seriously, Pinocch-. You knocked everyone's
socks off today in school, and we would be
proud to have you in our gang.
Rav
We're even thinking of expanding.
Maybe you could START A NEW BRANCH!
(laughter as the boys leave)
(sounds of a traveling circus are heard as
clowns and a circus manager enter)

Oh, well what have we here?
Pinocchio
Why are you looking at me like that?
Circus Manager
He even talks!
Come here, boy. I need a better look...

Pinocchio
That's right, sir.
But I'm out to prove I have a heart

Circus Manager

Pinocchio
I'm already learning things.
Circus Manager

Pinocchio

Circus Manager

Circus Manager
Well, ha, ha, ha, don't let me stop you.

It's a strange world, I tell you. He's a walking
nightstand, and his friends read like the menu
from a pizzeria!
Yo, on with the show.

(voice fades out as circus manager and clowns exit)
(Marionette music begins and marionettes enter.
This catches Pinocchio's attention. He puts down
his books to watch, joins in the dance, and winds up
being the lead dancer before it ends.)

Pinocchio

Stringer

Pinocchio
I'm Pinocchio.
Stringer
Pinocchio, huh? I'm Stringer. You dance very well.
Pinocchio
Thank you, sir.
Stringer
How would you like to come with me?
I could have you dancing on stages
all over the world?
Pinocchio
Oh, I can't do that. I'm going home.
Stringer
Now listen here, young fellow.
This is a golden opportunity!
Pinocchio
But what about school?
Stringer
I'll teach you.
I was a schoolboy once myself.
Pinocchio
But my books?
Stringer
I've already got them, see.
Pinocchio
I was taking them home to Geppetto.
Stringer
Geppetto! Oh, ho, ho. I've already talked with him.
Everything's fine. He said you could come with me.
Pinocchio
When did you talk with him?
Stringer
Just now. While you were dancing.
You do like to dance, don't you?
Pinocchio
Well, sure.
Stringer
Of course you do, and I'm offering
you the chance of a lifetime.
You'll earn tons of money,
and when you bring it home
Geppetto will be so proud.
He said it's fine. So are you coming?
Pinocchio
Well... for how long?
Stringer
Oh, you'll be back in no time.
Pinocchio
Does that mean I'll be back in no time,
or does that mean
there's no time when I'll be back?
Stringer
Pinocchio, you're funny.
You also worry too much.
Trust me. I know exactly what I'm doing.
(Stringer walks away with Pinocchio
and all the marionettes.)

IN THE WOODS FAR AWAY
Narrator 5
Stringer did know exactly what he was doing. He was taking
Pinocchio away for good. Poor Pinocchio. It was only his
first day out in the world, and already he'd been snatched
away by someone who didn't care at all. Days stretched into
weeks, while Stringer made money. But he never gave
Pinocchio any of it, and he never let him go home either.
Narrator 6
Pinocchio's little wooden heart longed for the friends he had
known only on the first day of his life. Months passed, and
show after show went by in town after town. Several times
Pinocchio almost ran away, but he wanted to take his books
with him, and Stringer, who knew the books meant a lot to
the boy, kept them locked in a safe place. Finally, one day,
Stringer had had enough.
Stringer
Pinocchio, I don't know what I'm going to do with you.
I give you fame and fortune, and a life most people
would die for, and here you are,
wishing you could be somewhere else.
Pinocchio
All I want to do is go back to my father,
and my friends, and school.
How come you never let me have my books?
Stringer
You are ungrateful, you know.
After all I've done for you?
Well, I'll tell you what. Here's your books. Let's go.
Pinocchio
Where?
Stringer
I'm going to teach you a lesson you'll never forget.
Narrator 7
Stringer took Pinocchio deep into the woods, and left him
there. It was the worst day Pinocchio had ever experienced.
He didn't know which way was home, who to trust, or even
where to spend the night. The sun slowly went down, the
forest grew dark, and all he could hear was the wind.

Pinocchio
I hear the wind calling,
but that's not the sound

I want to hear my name

Geppetto, Geppetto, there's never any answer

(Pinocchio falls asleep in the woods.
Geppetto walks sadly back to his shop.)
(The Blue Fairy finds Pinocchio in the woods.)
Blue Fairy
Pinocchio, wake up.
Pinocchio
Who.. who is it?
Blue Fairy
Someone who loves you.
Pinocchio
Someone who... oh, it's you.
Blue Fairy
I've come to help you.
But I didn't expect to find you here.
What happened?
Pinocchio
I was taken away by a bad man named Stringer.
He wanted me to dance for him
so he could have a lot of money.
Blue Fairy
How did he get you to come with him?
Did you go straight home from school like I told you?
Pinocchio
Yes, I was going straight home, just like you said,
but he grabbed me and took me away
for a long time, and locked up my books...
where are my books?...
(turns to gather them and puts on nose)
and finally he dropped me off in the cold woods.
Blue Fairy
You make it sound like it was all his fault.
Pinocchio
It was.
Blue Fairy
Turn around, Pinocchio.
You haven't told me the whole truth, have you?
Pinocchio
What do you...
Hey, what happened to my nose?
Blue Fairy
You didn't go straight home from school, did you?
Pinocchio
(hangs head)
No. I stopped to watch the marionettes.
Blue Fairy
Oh, Pinocchio. I knew it might not be so easy for you.
That's why I told you to go straight home. That's where
your friends and helpers are.
Pinocchio
Are you going to take me home now?
Blue Fairy
I'm going to take you back to the school.
That's where you got off track,
so let's go back and try again, all right?
Pinocchio
But what about my nose?
Blue Fairy
It'll have to stay that way for now.
Are you ready to come?
Pinocchio
I guess so. I'm sorry I didn't tell you the truth.
I'm not sure I want anyone to see me like this.
Blue Fairy
It will be a good reminder for you.
Come, let's leave this place before
Stringer comes back.
