Pinocchio Script - Scenes 1 and 2
SCENE #1 DAWN AT THE MAGIC TOY SHOP The Image Painter So soft the wind before the silent dawn And you and I as still, as still can be We come to catch a glimpse before it's gone A glimpse of what is past, and yet to be A story comes, a story goes, and then Around and round the story flows again Stand still with me, look far, look far from here Come see the shining pinnacles, the spires Catch your reflection in the stream so clear And feel the warmth beside the blazing fire Then tell me, tell me softly what you know Of memories untouched since they were drawn Of childhood lands so long, so long ago Of whispered echoes in the silent dawn The story comes, the story goes, and then Around and round the story flows again Narrator 1 Once upon a time, in a small village near the sea, there lived a toy maker named Geppetto. The toys he made were special (some even called them magic), for they moved and spoke as though they were real. But deep in the heart of Geppetto was a dream deeper still - to someday have a boy, a real boy, to call his own. And this is where the story began. Song 1 - The Magic Toy Shop (whisper) Tock, tick, tock Click-it, clock-it (little louder) Tock, tick, tock Click-it, clock-it (little louder) Tock, tick, tock Click-it, clock-it (full) Tock, tick, tock Verse 1 There's a tick, tock, tick and a click-it, clock-it, click And the sound of a hammer and file Here's the door, come on in it - You can stay for a minute You can stay if you wish for a very long while Every clink, clonk, clunk, every chink-it, chonk-it, chunk Every clap, every snap, every pop! Every doll spinning round, every color, every sound Is a part of the magic of the toy shop Part of the magic of the toy shop (Musical interlude while toys dance) Verse 2 Every morning fine, when the sun begins to shine He's at work with a song and a smile First he opens the locks up, then he winds all the clocks up Then he cooks up his breakfast with the usual style Every tick, tock, tick, every click-it, clock-it, click Every clap, every snap, every pop! Look at that sunshine. And spring just around the corner. Don't you think so, Mr. Zone? Cal Yes, I do, sir. But you can call me Cal. Geppetto Okay, Cal Zone. How about helping me tidy things up a bit. Cal Right away, sir. (grabs a broom and starts sweeping) Geppetto Rigoletto, good morning! Do you know what day this is? Rigoletto I think I do, sir. I've been thinking... maybe... Actually... I have no idea. Geppetto Then I guess I'll have to tell you. Today is the day we finish the project. What do you think about that? Rigoletto Oh, that's right, it is! Well, what do you know? Geppetto Hello, Miss Ahnia. Liz You can call me Liz. Geppetto All right, Liz Ahnia. How are you this morning? Liz Did you say today is the day we finish the little boy? Geppetto Yes. He's almost done. Look at him. He needs a smile, maybe. And perhaps a hat? Rigoletto I can find him one. Geppetto Here's my paint brush. Let's see. Not too much. Liz That looks good, sir. Rigoletto I found him a hat. Geppetto (puts hat on) How I have waited for this day. A little boy to call my own. I only wish he were... well, we must be content with what we have, right? He will be a fine boy, even if he's made of wood. (Geppetto helps the puppet sit up) Now to turn on the switch. Pinocchio (wakes up and looks around) Where am I? Geppetto You just woke up in the Magic Toy Shop! Pinocchio (takes a couple steps, looks around) (To Liz) Who are you? Liz I'm Liz Ahnia. Pinocchio What's Lasagna? Rigoletto It's an Italian dish prepared with mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. Mozzarella Did somebody say my name? Geppetto No, Mozzarella. We were talking about Lasagna. Mozzarella What about her? Rigoletto We weren't talking about Liz Ahnia, the Italian Miss. We were talking about Lasagna - The Italian Dish! Mozzarella (to audience) People and food get mixed up around here. Pinocchio So you're Liz Ahnia? Liz That's right. Pinocchio And that's Mozzarella? Geppetto Uh huh. Pinocchio Who are you? Rigoletto I'm Rigoletto. Pinocchio And you? Geppetto I'm Geppetto. Pinocchio Then... who am I? Geppetto, Rigoletto, Liz We don't know yet. Pinocchio But I must be somebody! Liz Let's ask Miss Flay. She's good with names. Geppetto (as Miss Flay steps forward) Miss Flay, perhaps you can help us. Our friend needs a name. Pinocchio Are you Miss Flay? Sue Yes, but you can call me Sue. Pinocchio Okay, Souffle! (pause) What's my name? Sue Well, now, it's easier said than done. Rigoletto How can it be easier said than done? When it comes to names, once you say it, it is done. Sue That's easy for you to say. Geppetto I'm sure it won't be hard. Let's all think. Liz I got one. How about "Knock On Wood?" Geppetto No, that's not it. Rigoletto I suggest "The Oak... Bloke?" Sue Actually, I think he should be called Peanut Butter. Geppetto Skip It! Meatball Excuse me, sir. Geppetto Yes, Meatball? Meatball I think he should be called Pinocchio. Rigoletto Pinocchio? Where did you get a name like that? Meatball From my Aunt. Sue Which one? Meatball Aunt Chovie! Geppetto Well, I have to say, Pinocchio is a fine name, even if it did come from an unexpected sauce. Liz You mean source, sir? Rigoletto Yes, as in "tomato source." Geppetto Then it's settled. Pinocchio it is and Pinocchio it shall be. Cal That's your name. Can you say it? Pinocchio Pin-oc-chi-o. Cal Good. Remember that. You'll need it when you go out into the world. Pinocchio What's the world? Geppetto (coming toward audience) Come. Look out the window. Do you see that? Pinocchio What? Geppetto Everything! All that you're looking at out there - that's the world. Liz It's a wonderful place, filled with adventure. Rigoletto It's a scary place, with danger around every corner. Meatball It's a place with food additives and non-meat sausages. Others Oh, that's disgusting. Liz Come on, Pinocch -. There are some things about the world that aren't nice. But it's a wonderful world if you stay in the right places. Listen to me. Song 2 - There's A World Out There Liz and Sue and "Optimists" There's a world out there and it's full of nice things Come over to the window - what do you see? There's a world out there just waiting to be explored Anyone can do it! There are places out there - I sincerely reckon If you listen real close you can hear them beckoning This is what they say - what are you waiting for? There's a world and it's waiting to be explored Rigoletto and "Cynics" There's a world out there and it's not very nice There are people with hands and hearts cold as ice If you listen to me you'll watch where you walk and who - you stop and talk to There are people who care and people who don't If you're not real careful you'll get caught by the ones who won't Care at all if you lose as long as they win There are people just waiting to do you in Pinocchio I'm not afraid - my heart is real strong I'm sure I would recognize anything wrong You can count on me - I know that for sure Let the world throw anything it wants to I don't mind at all - I'm as strong as I want to be And I want to be strong Liz and Sue and Optimists Rigoletto and Cynics There's a world out there and it's full of nice things - Watch out - - Watch out- Come over to the window - what do you see? Better beware - Better beware - There's a world out there just waiting to be explored - Out there - - Out there - Anyone can do it! - There are dangers - There are dangers There are places out there - I sincerely reckon - Watch out - - Watch out- If you listen real close you can hear them beckoning - Are you listening? - Are you listening? This is what they say - what are you waiting for? - Oo Oh - - Oo Oh - - There's plenty that you don't want to know! - There's a world and it's waiting to be... - Oo Oh - - Oo Don't want to know! There's a world and it's waiting to be... oo Oh - - Oo Don't want to, don't want to, don't want to know! Explored! (Night falls. All toys go slowly back to their places at the beginning.) Pinocchio (spoken) I'm a little confused. Some are saying "Go for it," and some are saying "watch out." Which is it? Geppetto There's a world out there and tomorrow you'll find That some of it's mean and some of it's kind Pinocchio Tell me why, Geppetto, why isn't it pure and good? Geppetto That's the way it should be But it isn't that way so as long as you're here You'll do better by far if your heart keeps listening Pinocchio If that's the way it is, I'm gonna listen for sure Geppetto Pinocchio, you know you mean a lot to me Pinocchio Geppetto, I promise, I'll make you proud, you'll see Pinocchio and Geppetto There's a world and it's waiting to be explored. Geppetto Good night, Pinocchio. Sleep well. Pinocchio Good night, Geppetto. (The Magic Toy Shop is asleep as the Blue Fairy enters.) Blue Fairy Pinocchio. Wake up, child. I have something to tell you. Pinocchio Who are you? Blue Fairy I'm your guardian angel. Pinocchio You're blue. Blue Fairy I'm made of moonlight. Listen, there's something you need to know. Your father, Geppetto... Pinocchio Is Geppetto my father? Blue Fairy Well, sort of... he made you, anyway... It's his wish to have a real boy. Pinocchio Aren't I a real boy? Blue Fairy No, Pinocchio. A real boy has a real heart and a real mind. Your mind and heart are made of wood. Pinocchio But does that really matter? I'm sure I can learn to be real. I'm gonna try real hard. Blue Fairy A new heart and a new mind don't come by trying, Pinocchio. Pinocchio But I promised Geppetto I would listen and learn... and I'm gonna keep that promise. I really am. You can count on me! Blue Fairy Ah, Pinocchio. You have so much to learn. Pinocchio You'll give me a chance to try, won't you, to prove myself strong and kind and good? Blue Fairy If that's what you wish for, I'll give you a chance to try. Pinocchio Thank you, Blue Fairy. Now I have two people to make proud. Geppetto and you. I'm going to do it, too. Blue Fairy Better rest now. Morning will come soon. You're going to school, you know. Pinocchio What's school? Blue Fairy Well... you'll find out when you get there. But be sure and come straight home afterwards. That's very important. Pinocchio I will, thank you. Blue Fairy Remember what I said. Pinocchio You can count on me. Blue Fairy Good night, then. Sleep well. Pinocchio Good night. (Blue Fairy leaves. Image Painter enters.) The Image Painter So there you have it - where, and why, and who The sleeping toys, the angel dressed in blue A dream within the heart, just like a seed A wooden boy, his promise guaranteed And this shall be just like it was before A million times the story comes around And we shall see what we have seen, and more And we shall find what other hearts have found	SCENE #2 HIS FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL Narrator 2 Down the street and around the bend from The Magic Toy Shop was the little schoolhouse. It was painted red, just like you would imagine, and it had trees and grass outside, and a little flagpole, and a bell that called all the children to come. The girls who came to school were, you know, sugar and spice and everything nice, and the teacher, whose name was Mrs. Pizza, said they were wonderful students. Narrator 3 I wish I could say that the boys were handsome and daring, and strong and caring, but it would probably be more accurate to say they were bad over here, bad over there, here bad, there bad, everywhere bad, bad. They gave Mrs. Pizza a hard time, and when she wasn't around, they called her "Large Pie." Narrator 4 Lunchtime had passed, and afternoon lessons had already started, when Pinocchio and Geppetto set out from the Magic Toy Shop to walk the few blocks to the schoolhouse. They arrived right in the middle of Math class. Things were going along just about like usual. Mrs. Pizza Okay, class, let's open our math books to page 29. (The girls open their books; the boys don't have books.) I hope you've all been studying. Mr. Ellini, would you read the first paragraph? Tort Just call me Tort. Mrs. Pizza Okay, Tortellini, would you read the first paragraph? Tort I would love to, but I don't have my book. Mrs. Pizza Where is your book? Tort It's at home with all my other books! (The boys all laugh.) Lin Mrs. Pizza, why don't boys ever do their homework? Mrs. Pizza I don't know. Maybe we should ask them. Mr. Ioli? Rav You can call me Rav. Mrs. Pizza Okay, Ravioli. Why don't you boys ever do your homework? Rav We do. Every night. But our dogs always eat it. (The boys all agree.) Mrs. Pizza What kind of dog do you have? Rav A HOT DOG! (The boys laugh loudly.) Mrs. Pizza And you mean to tell me your "hot dog" eats your homework every night? Rav (Looks around) That's right. He's ON A ROLL! (Boys - Laughter & "I get it. On a roll.") Mrs. Pizza Angela, would you read the first paragraph for us? Angela Yes, Ma'am. Today we will discuss multiplying by zero. Any number multiplied by zero is equal to zero, and zero divided by any... Mrs. Pizza, someone's at the door. (Mrs. Pizza walks over to where Geppetto and Pinocchio are standing.) Tort Maybe they ordered a "large pie." (Boys laugh softly.) Rav Hey, check it out. A wooden dude. Mrs. Pizza (turning toward class) I would like to introduce your new classmate. This is his first day in school, so let's make him feel welcome. All Welcome! Mrs. Pizza We have one chair left, so I guess it's yours. Pinocchio Thank you. (He walks to the chair and sits down.) Mrs. Pizza (To Geppetto) Thank you. We'll take good care of him. (Geppetto nods and leaves) Well, this is an unexpected surprise. I'll have to run downstairs and get him some books. While I'm gone, I'd like you to begin tonight's homework. Please do problems 1 to 15 on page 29. When I return, I expect to find you all working. Mac Pssst. What's your name? Rav Yo, wooden dude. Who are you? Tort Hey, blockhead. You got a name or what? Pinocchio Yes, I have a name. Rav Well, tell us what it is. Song 3- The Wooden Walkabout Pinocchio & (Class) Since you asked me, I will tell you - my name's Pinocchio (How do you spell it?) I don't know yet - I just got in you see I've never been to school before (Where did you come from then? What are you made of?) I am a little wooden boy (We can see that) And I was born in the magic toy shop Have you ever been inside the store? Class You mean the one where Geppetto works? Right there on the corner? Where the dolls are spinning and the toys all move? Can't tell you how many times I've stood at the window Wondering exactly what the toys all do Please teach us how to do the toy shop groove! Pinocchio Step to the left - Step to the right Spin halfway around and then Step into the shout - Hey! One to the left * Two to the right Listen to Pinocch and do the wooden The wooden walkabout Angela & (Pinocchio) It's nice to meet you - My name is Angela I've never met a wooden boy (There aren't very many) If you would like me to I'll be a friend to you Did you ever have a friend before? (I don't think so) First you said step to the left (Uh huh) Then you said step to the right (That's good) I can't remember any more (Then I'll help you) Pinocchio Here's where you spin half around First one way, then the other Then two steps strong across the floor Pinocchio It's not enough to just pretend it - Every move has a reason All part of the action and the storyline Don't stop with half of your heart - Throw everything in it When you play the part that's yours it makes you shine You do the part that's yours and I'll do mine! All** Step to the left - Step to the right Spin halfway around and then Step into the shout - Hey! One to the left * Two to the right Listen to Pinocch- and do... Listen to Pinocch- and do... All** Step to the left - Step to the right Spin halfway around and then Step into the shout - Hey! One to the left * Two to the right Listen to Pinocch- and do... the wooden... The wooden walkabout! (Hold position until applause ends.) Tort PIZZA ALERT! (All scramble for seats and begin working.) Mrs. Pizza Now, that's what I like to see. Pinocchio, I have your books for you. Would you like to come up and get them? Pinocchio Can I have a minute to catch my breath? Mrs. Pizza How did you get out of breath just sitting in a chair? Pinocchio (the whole class looks at him) (Pinocchio looks around at them) Well... you see... when you were downstairs... I was pretending I was the teacher. Mrs. Pizza And did the class learn anything while you were... teaching? Pinocchio Actually, I think they did. (laughter) Mrs. Pizza Well, in that case, I'll bring the books to you. But Pinocchio? Pinocchio Yes, Ma'am? Mrs. Pizza You'll remember, won't you, that this class already has a teacher? Pinocchio Yes, Ma'am! Mrs. Pizza Class is dismissed. (All leave except for Pinocchio and Angela.) Angela Pinocchio, you really are a lot of fun. Is everyone at The Magic Toy Shop as fun as you? Pinocchio I suppose so. They have funny names anyway. You have a beautiful name. Angela Do you think so? Thank you. I'm really glad you're in our class. You're not like the other boys. Pinocchio Why don't they have any books? Angela Because they think it's silly to study and do homework and learn. Pinocchio I don't think it's silly. I'm going to work hard at learning. I have to prove I have a heart that's real. Angela Well, stay away from the other boys then. They'll probably try to get you into their gang. Pinocchio What gang is that? Angela The Deli Rats. Pinocchio Well, they won't get me to join. I have to go back to Geppetto. Angela That's a good idea, but be careful on your way home. Tortellini and Ravioli and Macaroni want every boy in town to join the Rats. They've got most of the other boys already. You're probably next on their list. Pinocchio It's okay. Thanks for telling me though. I'm strong, and I have something to prove. Angela Bye, Pinocchio. Pinocchio** Bye, Angela. I'll see you tomorrow. (Angela leaves. Schoolroom scene changes to street scene. Pinocchio is standing there holding his books when members of the Rats arrive.)
