INSIDE THE FISH
Pinocchio
(now with donkey ears)
Where are we?
Angela
I think we're inside a big fish.
Pinocchio
It's cold in here.
Angela
It is. But at least we got you off the island.
You would have turned into a donkey
just like all the other boys.
Hey, Pinocch-, where did you get those ears?
Pinocchio
What ears?
Angela
These.
Pinocchio
(feels ears, then looks very sad)
Oh, what am I going to do now?
Every time I turn around, I'm worse than I was before.
Angela
You mustn't say that, Pinocch-.
Somehow we'll find a way out of here.
Pinocchio
But when we do, what will I be then?

I really thought that I could be

But now I find my nose is long
My ears are longer - look at me

Angela, I blew it again

It won't be easy
Your father's boat was washed ashore
And there was no one left on board
Pinocchio
You mean Geppetto sailed after me
And lost his life here in the sea?
That's the worst thing of all that I've done
Without him I cannot go on
Angela
Yet while his heart was beating warm
Out in the danger and the storm
What do you think he wished you then?

I can't go on, Angela
Angela

That's what makes it so hard
(short interlude)
Geppetto
(not visible)
Was that his voice? Did I hear him sing?
Or is my heart just imagining?
He's my little boy, twice lost from me
(Geppetto appears)
Are we reunited in the sea?
(Pinocchio runs to him)
Pinocchio, tell me, how did you come?
Pinocchio
Angela rescued me... then this big fish said YUM
Geppetto
How did this story all begin?
Pinocchio
I made a big mistake and then
Somebody took us far away
Angela
We were sad
All the boys were gone
Especially I missed Pinocch-
Remembering the time I told him
There's a brighter story still
The promise waits
You're going to make it - I know you will
Do you remember?
Pinocchio
Yes, I do.

From now on nothing's too hard, too rough
With love our hearts will be strong enough

Pinocchio
I'm sorry, father, for all I did.
Thank you for coming for me.
(looks at Angela)
Angela, thank you.

(reaches out for Pinocchio's hands)

Being lost and then found is a wonderful feeling. But, besides
being lost and then found, they were also trapped. This is
what occupied their thoughts for awhile. How would they
ever get out? It was a tough question. In the end they
decided to set what remained of Geppetto's boat on fire. It
was an all or nothing venture and they knew it. Before long
smoke was filling up the inside of the fish. Holding on to each
other, the three captives made their way toward the front.

Burn, little boat - somethin's happenin'
Smoke, flames, fire in the fish
Something smells like a favorite dish
Fried filet of sole
Smoke rising, billowing, brewing

Coughing, sputtering, angry, restless

Jump when he opens up his mouth

Colors, thoughts, a word, a song, a prayer
An image here, an image over there
A little bit from this, a bit from that
A wooden boy, a girl, a tall dark hat
A father's hands, working while it's day
A father's love, at night he sailed away
A friendship deep, and stronger as it grew
With promises and hopes and dreams come true
A thousand times it was, and yet shall be
The story is the same for you and me
So soft the wind, so still the silent dawn
With memories like shadows on the lawn
With echoes like reflections in the stream
And we who catch them watch as in a dream

(walks in to the Toy Shop. All are asleep.)
Pinocchio. Wake up, child. Wake up.

Who... who are... oh, it's you.
Blue Fairy
Yes. I've come to see you.
How are you doing?
Pinocchio
Okay, I guess. Exhausted.
But I'm back home now.
Blue Fairy
Yes, I know.
Are you glad?
Pinocchio
Yes... but I have to tell you...
I lost my way again.
I have donkey's ears now to prove it.
Blue Fairy
I can see.
Pinocchio
I'm afraid my heart is just as
wooden as it always was.
I tried so hard to be real.
Blue Fairy
Did you think you could change
your heart just by trying?
Pinocchio
I was hoping to. I wanted to please Geppetto.
And you too. But it didn't work.
Blue Fairy
Oh, Pinocchio. A new heart is a gift, you know.
It doesn't come by trying or working.
Pinocchio
Yes, I can see that now.
Blue Fairy
You've come a long way.
Go to sleep now and rest.
You will find when you wake up
that everything is different.
Pinocchio
Thank you.
(She leans over and kisses him,
waves her wand over him as he sleeps,
then departs. Toy Shop theme is heard
as Geppetto wakes up to start the day.)
Geppetto
Ah, what a wonderful morning. Look at that sunshine
streaming through the window. Now if I can just
manage to get up... oh... oh... I'm going
to have to give up these midnight swims.
Cal
Good morning, sir. It's good to have you back.
Geppetto
Thank you, Cal Zone. It's good to be back.
Rigoletto
What would you like for breakfast , sir?
Geppetto
Anything except for fried fish, please.
Liz
The countertops and windows are all clean, sir,
just like you asked.
Geppetto
Thank you, Liz Ahnia.
Meatball
Did you have a good trip?
Geppetto
Yes, but I spent a lot of time down under.
Meatball
Oh. Did you see any kangaroos?
Mozzarella
No, Meatball. That isn't what he means by down under.
Sue
Your books are all in order, sir.
Right down to the last penny.
Geppetto
Thank you, Souffle.
Sue
But, sir, I was wondering, why does wood look
so different after being in the water?
Geppetto
What do you mean?
Sue
I mean Pinocchio. He doesn't look like wood anymore.
Geppetto
He doesn't? (All go over and look)
Pinocchio? What happened?
Pinocchio
(waking up, stretching... no long nose or ears)
Oh, good morning, father.
I guess I slept a little late, didn't I?
(looks around at the others)
Hi, Liz. Hi, Cal.
Why is everyone looking at me?
Geppetto
Pinocchio, don't you see what has happened?
You're no longer made of wood.
Pinocchio
(looks down, then up with astonishment)
Look at me! It's true, it's true.
How did she? Oh, this is wonderful!
Geppetto
I can hardly believe what I'm seeing.
Cal
There's a knock at the door, sir.
A young girl is standing outside.
Pinocchio
A girl? Is it Angela??
Geppetto
Tell her to come in quickly.
Pinocchio
(jumping down)
Oh, father. Is it possible?
At last I am a real boy,
just like you were hoping.
Geppetto
I know! I know!
Pinocchio
(sees Angela)
Angela, look! I'm real!
Angela
Pinocchio. You are!
How ever did it happen?
Pinocchio
Don't ask now. I'll tell you later.
This is a time to dance! Come on, everyone.
You too, Geppetto.

Ha, ha, ha. That's my boy!
(Pinocchio dances with Angela and all the toys join in.)
